Isabella is no longer the top baby girl name in the United States.  The Social Security Administration’s official list has Sophia as the new favorite.   Isabella now ranks number two.

On the boy’s side, Jacob was the number one baby boy’s name in 2011.   A surprise choice for number two-  Mason comes in second.  Mason wasn’t even in the top 10 list in 2010.  It was number 12 last year and only cracked the top 25 in 2010. The Social Security Administration says celeb factor may have played a role.  Kourtney Kardashian’s son is named Mason.

Other names that have climbed fast on the list:  Iker for boys (Iker Casillas Fernandez is a popular goalkeeper for Real Madrid).  For girls Angelique has become a popular choice.

  1. 1975. We named our son Jacob after his great grandfather. The whole time he was growing up, there was never a single Jake in his school. Then after Jacob grew up, it became very popular.
We wanted to name our second Emily. Friends told us it was an “old” name. Fast forward 25-30 years, and became a popular name for girls.
I like to think that my hubbie and I were ahead of our time.
