In 2006 Melissa Segal was pregnant with identical twins. Everything checked out and her pregnancy seemed routine. Until one day in her 20th week when the Maryland school teacher started to feel intense pain in her stomach and back.
She and her husband Seth Edlavitch went to their doctor who informed them she was in labor. She was two centimeters dilated and 80 percent effaced. Her doctors tried to slow down her premature labor. But there was nothing they could do. Melissa delivered two baby boys prematurely. They did not survive.
“It was the worst thing I have ever had to go through in my life, “ Melissa said.
The couple was emotionally shattered. Melissa’s uterus was scarred during the delivery. But the couple was determined to have a child.
“We have so much love to give and share. We just want to have a family,” Melissa said.
They went through a total of ten rounds of in vitro fertilization before turning to adoption.
They briefly considered using an adoption agency. But an agency can be costly and the wait up to two years.
That’s when the couple made a very big – and creative- decision. They decided to use Facebook to look for a baby.
Seth’s network of friends included only about 40 people at the time. But a good friend of Seth’s posted a flyer on his own Facebook page. That led the couple to a pregnant mother who was looking to put her baby up for adoption.
On December 30, 2008 a beautiful baby boy named Noah was born.
Now the couple would like to adopt a second child. They are once again turning to social media to help get the word out.
It’s not easy putting your personal life story online. “You have to be okay with people knowing what you’re going through,” Seth said.
But it’s worth it, as they look at their playful little 3-year old son and dream of having a sibling for him.
It’s a waiting game, waiting for a baby #2 to enter their lives. But they have faith that things will work out.
“The baby you are meant to have will find you,” Segal said.
