The IRS has a $1 billion waiting for more than a million taxpayers. These are refund checks that have been unclaimed for 2008 . THERE IS A DEADLINE OF APRIL 17TH. AFTER THIS DATE, UNCLE SAM GETS TO KEEP IT.
The refunds are for people who did not file a federal income tax return in 2008 because they had too little income and weren’t required to file (even though taxes were withheld from their wages.)
Half of these refunds are for more than $637, according to the IRS.
There is no penalty for filing a late return if you’re due a refund.
